THE DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY?

If I were the President of the United States and I really wanted to do something stupid, I mean so stupid that it could never be undone no matter how utterly ridiculous it was, I'd invent a huge bureaucracy that was going to mushroom into a colossus that would add billions of dollars to the national debt while at the same time being given a task that was so vague that it would be impossible to measure its effectiveness. During the Sixties I worked for a guy who was a contractor. His specialty was tennis courts, but we did other concrete work as well and if he ever caught me with apparently nothing to do he used to tell me to "Do something even if it is wrong!" I was a teenager at the time and not very knowledgable about the world but even I knew that if I wasn't sure what to do one of the things I definitely should not do is unload a bag of sand into the gas tank of one of the company trucks.

Enter George Walker Bush the 43rd President of the United States. I voted for him, but mostly because his opponent Arnold Albert Gore Jr. was on a crusade to demolish the American economy so that he and some of his friends could become billionaires by pushing products that don't even exist so he could save planet earth from catastrophically overheating, bursting into flames and killing everyone. He wrote a book called 'Earth in the Balance' after talking to a couple of 'scientists' who provided evidence that if certain things happened the earth could burn itself up in about ten years. The book was widely read but it didn't start the panic that Big Al needed to get his business off the ground. He already had tens of millions of dollars from the tobacco farm he inherited from his father, Arnold Albert Gore Sr. so he didn't really need the money that bad, but the opportunity to become a billionaire beckoned and he wanted it.

Next he produced a documentary film called 'An Inconvenient Truth'. It was about how the polar ice caps were melting and glaciers all over the world were melting and in about ten years the whole earth would be flooded and everyone was going to drown. The photographs were doctored and the 'science' was questionable at best. It's been about forty years and all of the oceans are pretty much where they've always been. Al was very charismatic and he had been a senator for the state of Tennessee for a long time and had a lot of contacts.

If I wanted to start a panic across the USA where would be a great place to get it going? You guessed it, public schools. They were taken over by the democrats over a period of about twenty years and they had small brains and big money and Al Gore was ready to pick their pockets. There are about 13,000 school districts in the country and that so-called documentary was shown in about 12,000 of them, all in democrat strongholds. I know I said that democrats controlled the public schools but there are a few who hadn't  been completely dominated at the time. The truth is I have no idea how many schools actually showed the film but it was enough to spread panic in many locations throughout the country.

It was nonsense and I've never responded well to anyone who tries to get people to panic and that is what I think he was trying to do; start a widespread panic to help him implement strategies and laws that would help him reach that coveted 'billionaire' status. The vote was close and mostly because of that stupid documentary. I'm blown away by the stupidity of the average democrat. Fortunately the outcome was that Gore won the popular vote, but lost the heretofore ignored electoral college. America dodged a poison bullet. The problem was that GW was better but not by very much. He saddled us with a war in the Middle East that lasted about twenty years and a bureaucracy that we didn't need and we would quickly lose control of.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, the United States was the target of a well planned and well executed terrorist attack. Four commercial air carriers were hijacked and flown into three high visibility targets along the east coast; the World Trade Center towers in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington D.C. Both of the tallest towers of the WTC collapsed and damage to the Pentagon was extensive. Almost three thousand people were killed. There was supposed to be a fourth target, but United Airlines flight 93 left Liberty Internal Airport from Newark New Jersey headed for San Francisco and was hijacked over Ohio. The aircraft changed course and was headed for Washington D.C. when the passengers learned via cell phones that there had been three other planes hijacked and each of them had been deliberately crashed into targets in New York and Washington D.C. They knew they were going to be used to commit a terrorist attack and decided to force the large jet to crash before reaching it's assigned target, heroically forcing their way into the cockpit and crashing into a farmers field in Pennsylvania.

If I had been the directors of the FBI and CIA I would have resigned in disgrace the next day. The fact that they didn't see it coming is inconceivable. President Bush had been in office for about nine months and he was ready to go to war. On October 7 the United States and Great Britain began bombing sites around Afghanistan. The speeches President Bush made were precious. He promised to find out who was responsible and make them pay, which iars what should have happened, but it didn't. Intelligence sources said a guy named Osama Bin Laden was responsible. He was a billionaire from Saudi Arabia who hated the United States and was supposedly hiding in a cave in Afghanistan where he had organized training bases for terrorists. We believed him so let's go over there and get him right?

If I wanted to totally screw up an operation to find a terrorist who had trained at least four men to hijack and pilot a jumbo jet I would be guided by outdated information on a known terrorist who was operating terrorist training camps in the remote mountains of Afghanistan where there was no access to any aircraft and no place to land one if there were. When this all happened I didn't have any idea that there were training bases in Afghanistan where terrorists received training in how to commit mass murder, but the CIA did. So did the FBI and none of that mattered. So the 'lowly field special agents' in Minnesota thought that it was unusual for Middle Eastern men to want to learn how to steer commercial jets and only wanted to practice joy riding in the sky, but the 'big guys' in D.C. said something like "Nah, you're just a bunch of racist pukes". The agents were 100% convinced that what they were documenting was bizarre enough to take a closer look and wanted a warrant to search his property that was seized when he was arrested for a visa violation. A guy with no flight training at all except for instructions on crop dusting in a manual in his possession and he paid $6800 in cash to learn how to fly Boeing 747's. And upon being introduced to the simulator he wanted to fly around New York Citya. Only an FBI guy with minimal investigative experience would fail to see a potential problem with that and that's how you make it to the top of the FBI or any other law enforcement agency frankly, you go to all the right parties, learn who drinks what, tell the best jokes and after a couple of years your on your way to the top.

It helps if you transfer multiple times too. That's how they know you're loyal to the 'Bureau'. You don't know a damn thing about invetigations, but you've learned a lot about different areas of the country and the rest of the world as well. Along the way you help with investigations enough to get your name on a couple and you interview for all the right jobs; and you never get in trouble. You never stay in one place long enough for anyone to notice anything unusual about you. So that's how a terrorist with a laptop computer containing names and numbers of other terrorists avoids being questioned prior to the worst attack by a foreign enemy since Pearl Harbor. So GW gets some weak intel about possible weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Sadaam Hussein used a poison gas to kill several dozen peoole he doesn't like and we are diverting the nain portion of the army in the area from Afghanistan to Iraq.

What a great way to prolong a war. By now it's pretty clear that Osama Bin Laden has fled Afghanistan and is hiding somewhere else. May 1, 2011,  Osama Bin Laden was killed in a house in Islamabad Pakistan, That's ten years after the attack on New York City and Washington D.C. That's a long time. I guess it's a good thing too since the war in Iraq effectively ended in 2006 and now the army was in Afghanistan asking, "Who the hell is Osama Bin Laden? We're fighting the Taliban!" Since Osama Bin Laden was the mastermind of the 9/11 attack and several of his homies were already serving prison terms longer than two hundred years and now he's dead the military personnel in Afghanistan can go home right? The fights over. We won.

Nope. President Bush isn't done yet. He wants regime change in Afghanistan so he has to defeat the Taliban. Nobdyy has ever beaten the Taliban for so many reasons that anyone with any military sense at all will leave them alone. In the 70's and 80's they were our friends. We helped them beat the snot out of the Russians. Then we left Afghanistan. President Bush kept the army there to do the impossible; "We'er 'Mericans, that's what we do. No Taliban gon' tell us what to do!" At least not until August 2021 when another president who was about as smart as GW decided to pull out. It was the most embarrassing moment for the United States since the panicked rout of American soldiers and Vietnamese civilians in 1975 Saigon. It could have been an orderly withdrawal if there had been anyone with any brains in charge, but it was a democrat show and it had to end bloody. Taliban closing in on the airstrips and planes taking off as fast as they could and a suicide bomber killed himself, 13 Marines and about two hundred civilians. The war President George W. Bush started and lost control of twenty years earlier was finally over and we didn't gain a thing. The Taliban won. They didn't defeat our military, they never could have done that. The only body that could accomplish that was the President of the United States working with Congress and a totally inept Pentagon command staff, but at least it was finally over. Unfortunately what should have been an orderly withdrawal turned into a panicked rout. A truly embarrassing moment for our country as the Taliban used a suicide bomber to kill 13 United States Marines and hundreds of innocent civilians.

Every day they are endangering American citizens at home, here in the 'Homeland' as we call America now. The departments of Immigration and Customs enforcement and the Border Patrol now fall under the Director of the Department of Homeland Security which is actually ridiculous. The Director of Homeland Security has no idea what the training needs of those two departments are and they have been ordered to deport everyone who is in the country illegally which is no small task since people have been invited to come here illegally since at least the administration of GW Bush. In order to deport someone who is in the country illegally you have to first identify them and that involves doing a lot of homework. They can't target people because of their appearance for example. Or if they have an accent. The Border Patrol officers were chasing anyone who looked Hispanic and asking them where they were from and other questions that they had no right to ask. They were doing the same to people with heavy accents. Border Patrol officers were also covering their faces so nobody knew who they were and their uniforms were not uniform. They were wearing blue jeans and other color pants and t-shirts with various product logos emblazoned on the front,  even  their bullet proof vests were all different. Some said 'Police' others said 'Agent', or Border Patrol' (my favorite actually) so they could easily been impersonating law enforcement. There was no way to know.

I watched the video recordings of the Border Patrol and ICE and it was embarrassing. They would jump out of their unmarked cars and start running toward people. Each in a different uniform, each with their faces covered and each of them carrying an automatic rifle. It was scary even to me. Most of those people came here from countries where even if they were being approached by law enforcement they ran because where they came from the police brutally beat people, robbed them or even killed them so yeah, they ran from our guys too because it was the only sensible thing to do. In a similar situation I probably wouldn't have run away, but I would've been nervous and I was born here and I'm a white guy with blond hair, blue eyes and a California accent. They need to prioritize, prisons first because they are the easiest to locate and many of the inmates who are here illegally are probably about to be granted parole or early release, and others are completing their sentences and need to be deported before they are released. After that you verify legal status at traffic stops and arrests.

Training is so important to law enforcement because it helps them understand what their job is and it helps them accomplish their mission legally instead of giving them vague instructions, "Go out and arrest as many illegal aliens in a day that you can!" Orders like that require that the people involved be given special training on how to accomplish the mission because it is literally impossible to tell by looking at someone if they're in the country legally or not. The Border Patrol people have been chasing down anyone who isn't white basically. I don't think their racists they just haven't been given proper training. It will take longer to do it right, but doing it right is the only way to accomplish the mission.

The DHS is grossly inefficient. They are a real danger to our way of life and should be disbanded and their current employees absorbed by the other federal law enforcement agencies if they meet the criteria. Some of them may lose their jobs and have to find a real job and that's ok too.
